MATT MOLDENHAUER

aka “Moldy”

The Low-Down on Matt]:

Coming from a long line of competitive swimmers, swimming is in Coach Matt’s blood. He swam competitively all the way into his college years at Sewanee (University of the South). During graduate school at Clemson, he started running, and soon after completed his first Marine Corps Marathon. He has never looked back. Even after two hip surgeries, he continues to train and race (…just more conservatively than he used to). He’s since completed 20 marathons (including 4 Boston Marathon qualifying times); one Full Ironman Triathlon; five Half Ironman triathlons; and too many 5ks, 10ks, and sprint triathlons to count. Coach Matt was also the Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series “Paul King Award” winner in 2014.

What He Coaches:

Primary emphasis is swim coaching, but passionate about coaching all triathlon disciplines.

Favorite Non-Running Activities:

Hobbies include woodworking/carpentry, playing music, and spending time with his daughter Colbie and wife Hannah.

What Matt does when he isn’t coaching:

Coach Matt lives in West Ashley with his wife (Coach) Hannah, daughter Colbie and dog Boston. Coach Matt loves running with his family. (You might even see Coach Matt and Colbie running in several local 5ks, with Colbie in a stroller!). Other activities include swimming at the local pool, biking on his trainer, or working on any number of projects around the house. In his other job, Coach Matt plans and designs parks and recreation facilities in the Charleston area.

Defining Moment In Matt’s Career:

Pushing through rain and wind to run my marathon PR (2:58) at the Chevron-Houston Marathon in 2013. This required coordinating with a pack of runners with similar pace goals, and was one of my first big lessons and successes as an endurance athlete.
